NEA updates: awards, conference presentations, reduced LA membership rate and new Chief Executive

National Energy Action (NEA) launched its 2017 Heat Heroes Awards on 11 September, and its 2017/18 Warm Homes Campaign Awards on 20 September.

NEA has also now published the presentation slides from its Annual Conference, held on 12 and 13 September on its website at http://www.nea.org.uk/conferences-and-s ... ions-2017/ and has announced a new Local Authority Lower Rate for membership of £75 + VAT, which includes all benefits of the standard rate of £300 + VAT, except for discounts on training, publications and conference fees. The Heat Heroes Awards recognise individuals who have gone ‘above and beyond’ to help people living in fuel poverty in their local community in England and Wales. This can be through work or through voluntary activities outside of the workplace. Not-for-profit organisations including local authorities, health and social care agencies, voluntary and statutory agencies and community groups are eligible to apply for the award.

The awards ceremony will take place in the House of Commons on Tuesday 6 February 2018. Entries should be submitted by 20 October 2017.

The Warm Homes Campaign Awards will provide grants of £500 to enable a number of not-for-profit and statutory organisations based in England and Wales with the funds needed to support relevant events and activities taking place during the campaign period. This may include launches of strategies and action plans; energy efficiency awareness days; advice sessions; project visits by VIPs; and other innovative ways of communicating the issues around fuel poverty and energy efficiency locally. Successful organisations will be expected to promote their events to the local media as part of the campaign, as well as engage the support of MPs and other local elected representatives.

The Warm Homes Campaign is NEA’s annual winter initiative, focusing on the need for people to be able to stay warm in their homes. The campaign itself will take place from Monday 20 November up to Fuel Poverty Awareness Day on Friday 23 February 2018.

The entry deadline for the Warm Homes Campaign Awards is Friday 13 October 2017.

Jenny Saunders will step down from the role of Chief Executive of NEA at the end of December, after 30 years at the charity.

It has now been announced that Adam Scorer has been appointed as Jenny's successor and will join NEA on 1st December. Adam has had an extensive career in consumer advocacy, starting at Which? and going on to hold several senior director roles in policy and communications at Energywatch, Consumer Focus and Citizens Advice, with an interim role at Energy UK.

We'd like to wish both Jenny and Adam all the best for the future.
