CMA finds that SSE/Npower merger warrants further scrutiny

On 26 April the Competition and Markets Authority's (CMA) announced that the initial phase of its investigation into the proposed merger of SSE Retail and Npower has concluded that the removal of competition between the two companies could lead to higher prices for some customers.

SSE and Npower now have until 3 May to offer measures to address the CMA’s concerns. If they do not provide such ‘undertakings’, the CMA will refer the merger for a Phase 2 investigation.
